Here’s a clean, reliable way to collect and preserve a sample using the coffee filter method:

1. Start Clean

  • Use clean hands or gloves
  • Have fresh scissors or nail clippers
  • Avoid cross-contamination (wipe tools with alcohol between birds)

2. Collect the Sample

  • Clip the very tip of the nail (quick) just enough to get a drop of blood
  • Let 1–2 drops fall directly onto the coffee filter
  • Do NOT smear, let it absorb naturally

3. Let It Fully Dry

  • Air dry for at least 10–15 minutes
  • Keep it in a clean, dry area
  • Avoid stacking or touching other samples while wet

4. Label Clearly

  • Write directly on the filter or bag:
    • Bird ID
    • Breed/pen (if needed)
  • Do this before or immediately after collection

5. Store Properly

  • Once fully dry:
    • Place in a place in labeled baggies.
  • Keep samples cool, dry, and out of sunlight

6. Ship Smart

  • Ship as soon as possible
  • Tracking your sample IS recommended
  • Avoid extreme heat or humidity during transit

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Too little blood (faint samples = weak DNA)

  • Smearing or layering blood
  • Sealing before fully dry (causes mold/degradation)
  • Cross-contamination between birds
