Egg Shell Membrane Sample Instructions (DNA Testing)
Sample Type:
Egg shell pieces containing membrane with a visible blood spot or vein, approximately quarter-sized.
Place each egg shell sample in its own plastic baggie.
Collection Guidelines
1. Prevent Cross-Contamination
-
After handling each egg or bird, wipe fingers and all tools (tweezers, clippers, scissors) with a fresh alcohol wipe.
-
Use clean tools between birds to avoid mixing DNA.
-
Store each sample in a separate, labeled baggie.
2. Handling the Egg Shell Membrane
-
Select shell pieces that contain:
-
A small blood spot, or
-
A dried membrane area with visible vein material
-
-
The ideal piece is about the size of a quarter.
-
Avoid collecting large, wet, or overly bloody membrane sections that may spoil.
3. Storage Before Shipping
-
After bagging, you may store egg shell samples in the freezer. This helps reduce clotting and preserve tissue quality.
-
Freezing is NOT required during shipping as long as:
-
Membranes contain minimal moisture, and
-
Samples are kept in separate, sealed baggies.
-
Important:
✔ Small dried membrane + a drop of blood = perfectly fine at room temperature
✘ Large wet pieces, full shells, or pooled blood = can spoil during transit and are not recommended
